The opening of this film fits in the convention of thrillers because it has elements such as suspense present there. In the beginning the use of the non-diegetic eerie music traps the audiences eyes on screen as it intrigues them to know what will happen, as the scissor like music symbolises some sort of danger approaching. 2 men come out of a motel one leading the other following, which already shows who is more superior and who just follows. The superior one wears a black suit, the connotation of that colour shows he is the powerful one, he is more sophisticated with his style. However the other man is just wearing a casual white t-shirt, which shows he isn't so worthy. The use of the connotation and differences between these men is so the audience can guess who the main villain is, it just gives a clearer view. As they come out of a motel, it shows there was obviously some dodgy business, as motel reminds us of the negatives such as the 'prostitution place' or place where drug dealing take place etc. Once they come out the motel they approach the car, the car is a very fancy blue car, which conveys they are quite wealthy. The black suited guy goes back in telling the the other to stay in car, silence was placed during his absence which creates suspense, as its like there is something wrong happening. Once he comes back he takes over he driver seat again, showing his much superior and the other. He is then order to go back inside to fetch water, as he goes back inside, the music builds up again. There is stain of blood on the table which conveys someone has been killed, the atmosphere gets very intense and slowly the camera moves to show 2 bodies lying dead on the floor with blood everywhere. Out of the blue a little child appears from the bedroom, and as the guy notices that he slowly gets his gun out and shoots her straight, with no regret. Which conveyed how cold blooded people like that are. The whole opening scene was at a very slow pace, tension slowly building throughout.
Zodiac-
This starts off with a car going past and diegetic music playing, which starts of too create the mood. Lee Norris is introduced as he is asked to step in the car with another women. They stop off at a quiet place, and both sit there talking, there seemed to be an obvious attraction between the two but then suddenly a mysterious car pulls up at the back. It was very dark and tension starts to build as it conveys some sort of danger approaching. It then drives off, which is quite confusing and weird to the audience as they would have thought someone would come out the car but nothing happened. This then leaves the characters worried, increasing tension between the two of them, as the women clearly knew someone from that car. After few seconds of worrying the car comes back again, this time directly behind their car with bright flash almost blinding the two of them in the car. This time the mysterious person comes out the car and shoots them both and walks off. Loud rock music comes on at the end while the shooting goes on which is very disturbing. The suspense created engages the audience into watching more of the film, as they are intrigued to know why he shot them both and who he is.
Brick-
As soon as it starts the sound traps the audience in the scene due to the ringing type of sound, as if a the instrument of a spoon and a glass. Its very repetitive and echoing which keeps the sinister effect going. The camera then moves to a face of a boy who is shivering in the cold an looking down in guilt and fear. The camera then moves to show a woman lying dead on the ground, her hair draining into the ice cold flow of water. The colour of the scene is pale blue, which connotes the bitterness, and the guilt and pain the boy may be going through. The scene is in utter silence and all there is the non diegetic sound playing, which creates tension.
No country for old men-
It begins with off screen dialogue, setting the mood. The camera then captures the idyllic scene which is disrupted by the police car with two police men. This is foreshadowing to show something bad will happen as police are having to arrive on the scene. The guy who is arrested is taken to the police station, and there he escapes by choking a police officer alive by his hand cuffs. The sound of the police officer struggling, as he scratches the floor which is very disturbing and startling. He then goes off with the car, and stops an ordinary guy in the road acting as police officer and shoots him straight in the head with an oxygen tank, by this you can tell this guy is very dangerous. This moment is very suspenseful as it is quite slow paced, so it keeps the audience engaged as they are waiting for him to shoot with the oxygen tank. This is again very unsettling and creepy. Just by the opening scene the audience can clearly identify the villain, who seems to be an psychopath. His appearance is very ominous and weird, he automatically creates tension when his around people as the audience knows he is very harmful, so the person will die some way or anther. His killing is very torturous and painful, which adds the element of gruesome.
