Birds

Birds is a about a young wealthy women who moves into a small Northern California town due to her potential boyfriend, but soon this town is attacked by millions of vicious birds.


Suspense was maintained throughout the film due to the constant attacking of birds, at one scene the kid were coming out the school, and there was a bunch of birds behind the school. This scene was very worrying as the kids needed to be absolutely silent so the birds wouldn't notice, however that didn't work, as the birds came flying in and started attacking all the children, in this particular scene the element of danger was also there, as the birds were very vicious so it kept the audience on their seat as the kids could be really badly injured.



Media theories cannot really be applied to this thriller because there is no ending, it ends on a cliff hanger, the problem wasn't solved. Which is quite confusing as it leaves the audience thinking was there any point, however the positive side of the cliff hanger, is that it keeps the audience still questioned and so they will be intrigued to know if there is a sequel, or find a solution to the ending themselves. Its not like the normal films were the ending is solved for the audience, in this one the solution is still not known nor was the cause. So todorovs theory of the new equilibrium was not established either.

Laura Mulvey's theory:
The one theory that can be applied to this film is the Laura Mulvey's theory of the males exotic desire, the main character Melanie Daniels, was shown in a very elegant way, not in sexy way but more a sophisticated women, with her hair tided back and smart formal dress sense showed not all women need to wear revealing clothes to be attractive. However she was attractive, which would appeal to the male audience. However she didn't have a passive role, she was one of the main characters, which shows women don't always need to be a side role.

Alfred Hitchcock added gory to this film to keep the audience on their seats and keep them engaged. One scene a mans house was invested by birds, which left a man dead, with his eyes taken out. This would make the audience feel disgusted. Also gives them thrills, as it shows how dangerous these birds are, so they are engaged into the film as they are interested to know what more damage these birds can do.
